Ly α Cloud Size Evolution and Shape from QSO Groups

چکیده

We present results from Keck HIRES, KPNO 4m/RC Spec and HST FOS spectra of a low-redshift, close QSO pair and a close, higher-redshift QSO triplet in order to explore the size evolution, shape and clustering of Ly α absorbers. The results we highlight here indicate that there is no strong evidence for evolution of Ly α cloud size with redshift, that strong (Wo > 0.4Å) Ly α forest absorbers are probably not filaments, but probably more sheet-like. For C IV absorbers a large component of clustering on 200 km s < ∆v < 600 km s scales along single sightlines is due to internal velocities of single absorbers, not clustering between absorbers.

Reobservation of Close Qso Groups: the Size Evolution and Shape of Lyman Alpha Clouds

In order to study the size and shape of the absorbers that lie in front of the QSOs, in particular the Ly α forest, we present an analysis of 785 absorption lines in the spectra of five QSOs in close groupings: a pair (LB9605: 1517+2357 at z = 1.834 and LB9612: 1517+2356 at z = 1.903, with a separation of 102 arcsec between them) and a triplet (KP 76: 1623+2651A at z = 2.467, KP 77: 1623+2653 a...

The Size and Nature of Lyman Forest Clouds Probed by Qso Pairs and Groups

Closely separated QSO pairs and groups make it possible to probe the size, geometry and spatial clustering of Ly forest clouds. Recent spectroscopic observations of Q1343+2640A/B give evidence that the transverse sizes of Ly clouds are very large at redshifts 2 (Bechtold et al. 1994, Paper I). In this paper, we describe a robust Bayesian statistical method for determining cloud sizes in spheric...

A Group of Galaxies at Redshift 2.38

We report the discovery of a group of galaxies at redshift 2.38. We imaged ∼ 10% of a claimed supercluster of QSO absorption-lines at z = 2.38 (Francis & Hewett 1993). In this small field (2 radius) we detect two Ly-α emitting galaxies. The discovery of two such galaxies in our tiny field supports Francis & Hewett’s interpretation of the absorption-line supercluster as a high redshift ‘Great Wa...

Emission within a Damped Lyman α Absorption Trough : the Complex Sight Line Towards Q 2059 − 360 ⋆

We present new spectroscopic observations of the quasar Q2059−360, confirming the existence of an emission feature within the Damped Lyman Alpha (DLA) absorption trough. By observing also at slit positions offset from the quasar, we show that the emission is spatially extended by at least a few arcseconds, and hence confirm that the feature seen must be due to emission rather than unusual absor...
